Environmental Stewardship & Circularity Impact Topic in Practice Guide

B Lab released updated B Lab Standards 2.0 in April 2025. Within these standards, there are seven Impact Topics used to measure a company’s positive impact and, through recertification, continuous impact improvement. This guide focuses on the Environmental Stewardship & Circularity Impact Topic, which asks companies to take a conscientious and sustainable approach and to become environmental stewards, demonstrating accountability and leadership. It sets requirements for companies to understand and address their environmental impacts, operate sustainably as part of a circular economy, and minimize negative environmental impacts in their supply chains.

Embracing environmental stewardship means contributing to a future where businesses, people, and the environment can thrive without exploiting natural ecosystems and marginalized communities. Companies can demonstrate environmental stewardship by ensuring their environmental impact stays within planetary thresholds and promoting resilient natural systems that circulate resources and reduce the extraction of virgin resources to an absolute minimum.
